We are more dependent on electricity than probably ever before in history. Would you even find yourself in the event of a prolonged power outage?
We have learned that in some Austrian production facilities, workers have already been prepared for the example of a multi-day electrical eclipse.
We have checked what the Administration of the Republic of Slovenia for Protection and Rescue advises if this does happen.
What can cause an electrical eclipse?
Power outages can occur for a variety of reasons. It can be caused by weather conditions such as sleet, snow and wind, natural disasters, overloading of the electrical network, power plant outages, work interventions on the electrical infrastructure, and the like.
Terrorist or hacker attacks can also pose a danger.
What are we left without when the ‘power goes out’?
During a prolonged power outage, heating, lighting, food preparation, water supply, hot water preparation, cooling and other services that require electricity to operate can be disrupted or even disabled.
There may also be disruptions in communication systems, due to non-functioning traffic signals, greater caution in traffic is necessary.Elevators, electric control of blinds and garage and entrance doors, and street lighting will also not work during an electrical eclipse.
What is good to have at home?
Due to the interrupted electricity supply, which may last for a long time, it is recommended that you prepare:
a sufficient amount of water, including water disinfectants,
a permanent supply of food for emergency situations, including food for the elderly or babies,
sufficient amount of food for domestic animals,
medicines and first aid equipment,
hygiene aids,
warm clothes and blankets
gas cooker, can opener, pocket knife,
battery radio receiver and spare batteries,
cash.
Consider preparing food without electricity
It is also good to consider methods of heating that do not require electricity. It is also necessary to prepare for food preparation options that do not require electricity. You can also prepare food on a charcoal or gas grill, but only use it outside.
Do not open refrigerators and freezers unless absolutely necessary. After the power is restored, check the suitability of the food.
How to banish darkness?
When the electricity ‘goes out’, we can forget about the lights – both those at home and all the lights on the roads and in tunnels. In order not to remain in the dark, you can use battery lamps for home lighting, for which you provide the appropriate battery inserts.
If you are going to use kerosene lamps, be careful when topping up the kerosene and take care of fire safety. You can also use candles for lighting, but they should not burn unattended.Electricity generators can provide electricity, but safety must be taken into account when using them. Since they are internal combustion engines, carbon monoxide is released during their operation.
“Deadly dangerous concentrations can occur after just a few minutes, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions when installing generators,” the Protection and Rescue Administration explains.
It is important that you never install the generator in a room, do not place the generator in recesses such as a shaft, sinkhole, basement, install the generator at an appropriate distance from the building, namely at least seven meters.
The exhaust pipe of the generator must be directed away from the building, it is also important to monitor the wind direction and adjust the position of the generator to the wind direction.
Do not forget to follow the information
It is a good idea to have a battery-powered radio ready so that you can monitor information in the event of an electrical eclipse. Switch off mobile phones to extend battery life. You can also charge the battery of mobile phones and similar devices in the vehicle if you have a suitable connector for this, but be careful not to drain the vehicle’s battery.
