Off-grid living is a fully empowered lifestyle of an individual, family or friends (group) living independently of the “system”. Instead of being dependent on the normal infrastructure of urban life, they are self-sufficient. Living outside the system (known as off grid) is always in cooperation with nature, supplying your own energy, water and even growing your own food. What are the basic skills, knowledge and values that are absolutely necessary for such a way of life?

Manual skills
Work skills are the biggest foundation we need for a self-sufficient life and we cannot do without it. You can do most of the systems, things, gadgets and facilities yourself in self-care, but this is not possible without manual skills. Using a hammer, saw, screwdriver, as well as how to connect wires, dig a pit,… Knowledge of how from raw materials, e.g. trees that grow in the place where we live, to prepare useful materials (for masonry, furniture, maybe also textiles,…). Due to the remoteness from populated areas, the knowledge of maintenance and basic repairs of systems (for example, water or electrical systems) and the machines with which we perform our work is also practical.

First aid
Living outside the system usually means being away from populated areas, cities, doctors or hospitals. That is why it is important to have as much first aid knowledge and skills as possible, so that we can help ourselves or our loved ones in case of accidents or illness. Checking heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, dressing wounds and stopping bleeding… are the basics without which one cannot survive outside the system. It is also very good to have a doctor who can be contacted in case of problems and who can also help over the phone or the Internet, and assess the necessity of a visit to the hospital and the like.

Fire safety
Inaccessibility of firefighters, living near forests or fields, etc. Even without the basics of extinguishing fires, it is not possible, as firefighters take a very long time to arrive at the location. Therefore, it is necessary to take care of the equipment and the plan in case of a fire. By the time a fire occurs, it is already too late to think about how to deal with the situation. When we are in contact with fire, it is necessary to maintain full attention and only in this way can we avoid more serious problems. Most fires happen because of human carelessness. When it comes to fire safety, however, prevention is the most important thing! Fire safety must also be taken into account when designing the construction and layout of the residential plot.
These are the most basic skills and knowledge needed to survive outside the system. If you are thinking about this way of life, it is best to first acquire the necessary knowledge and skills, and only then start with the plan and realization of self-care.
