How to safely delete a profile
At the time when the microblogging social network Twitter was taken over by the richest man on Earth, Elon Musk, who again invited the censored Donald Trump to Twitter because of his hate speech and fake news, and now allowed the spread of conspiracy theories in connection with covid-19, more as one million users decided to leave the platform. But many of them have made a mistake that can cost them dearly, so if you have decided to stop tweeting, we offer you some useful tips.
If you are a Twitter user and simply deactivate your profile, it will take 30 days before your account is permanently deleted. After this time, your (now former) username will once again be freely available on the market, meaning that anyone can claim it. So it could happen that after a month or so, a third party tweets “on your behalf”, and this can be quite unpleasant, especially if that person does not have good intentions.Twitter says the 30-day reprieve is for those who might change their mind during that time and want to reactivate their profile, but for those of you who are determined to leave Musk’s sandbox for good now, here are some helpful hints. First, lock the profile, then delete all tweets, retweets and likes. Of course, if you are (were) an active Twitter user – like Janez Janša – there is a lot of it, so you can help yourself with this with an online tool that will do it for you. Many of them are free and freely accessible through web search engines, but the most convenient ones can be found at tweetdeleter.com.
The last step is to open the privacy settings (settings & privacy) and select the subsections privacy & safety and audience & tagging, where you select the command ‘protect your tweets’. If you have any other personal data on your profile, edit the edit profile tab, in which you delete all data and replace your profile photo.
Finally, change your password to something impossible to guess, and your job is done, your online identity is protected, and your tweeting days are over. Goodbye, Elon!
